A custom, semi-automated full portal crane engineered to move, stockpile and retrieve concrete sleepers at the Narwonah Material Distribution Centre near Narromine.

HIGH-VOLUME HANDLING ACROSS A 1 KM+ STOCKPILE

28t RATED CRANE CAPACITY
72 SLEEPERS PER HANDLING CYCLE
26m NOMINAL PORTAL SPAN
1 km+ STOCKPILE GRID LENGTH

The Inland Rail program requires large volumes of concrete sleepers to be unloaded, stored and returned to rail wagons for installation. Martinus Rail needed a purpose-built system capable of repetitive outdoor operation, consistent cycle performance and controlled handling across an extensive stockpile grid.

The system integrates lifting, travel and precise sleeper placement into one purpose-built operation, supporting efficient material flow between rail wagons and long-term storage areas.

ONE CRANE, 72 SLEEPERS PER LIFT

CUSTOM SLEEPER GRAB

An ACIMEX electro-hydraulic grab enables the crane to pick and place up to 72 concrete sleepers in one handling cycle.

SEMI-AUTOMATED HANDLING

The crane supports repeatable transfer between rail wagons and defined stockpile positions, with the process reversed when sleepers are required for installation.

SELF-CONTAINED POWER

An onboard generator powers the crane, supporting travel and operation across the extended outdoor stockpile area.

OUTDOOR DUTY

The full portal double girder crane incorporates wind monitoring, storm restraints, floodlighting, radio control and environmental protection for hot, dusty conditions.

DESIGNED, BUILT AND SUPPORTED NATIONALLY

PURPOSE-BUILT DESIGN

The lifting system was engineered around sleeper geometry, stockpile layout, operating cycles and site conditions.

NATIONAL MANUFACTURING

Fabrication, assembly and testing were coordinated across Eilbeck facilities in Perth, Sydney and Moss Vale.

FULL-SCALE TESTING

The crane and hydraulic grab were tested with a full array of sleepers before delivery and commissioning in Narromine.

LOCAL SERVICE SUPPORT

Scheduled servicing, inspections and on-call support are provided through Eilbeck’s Orange service team.

WHY it matters

The Martinus Rail project demonstrates Eilbeck’s ability to combine custom mechanical handling, semi-automation and national manufacturing to support efficient rail infrastructure logistics.
